Ms. Carteen is a pragmatic problem solver who litigates a wide range of complex business and intellectual property disputes, including copyright, trademark and patent matters.

Through combining her extensive experience with all phases of litigation and knowledge of the issues particular to her clients’ businesses, she tackles each case with an appreciation of the inherent short and long-term business implications.  Ms. Carteen collaborates with clients from the inception of a dispute to ensure that she is providing the requisite combination of aggressive and cost-efficient representation to meet her clients’ objectives.  

Ms. Carteen received her J.D. from Campbell University School of Law and her B.A., cum laude, from the University of Southern California. She is licensed to practice in the States of California and North Carolina. Ms. Carteen is also admitted to the U.S. Court of Appeals, Ninth Circuit; all U.S. District Courts in California; and the U.S. District Courts for the Western and Eastern Districts of North Carolina.

    • Successfully defended international company in class action anti-trust lawsuit that accused client of using multi-award winning website to restrain competition in the online gaming market.
    • Identified areas of innovation to support clients’ business strategies in various industries, advised companies on how to develop and protect their products and services and worked with foreign counsel to accomplish objectives.
    • Negotiated and litigated clients’ rights arising from the following contractual agreements: nondisclosure, employment, production services, promotional, license, representative, manufacturing, facilities use and photography, and advertising (including affiliate marketing).
    • Represented shoe manufacturer in trade dress infringement, dilution, and unfair competition action. Obtained favorable judgment for client, which states client owns distinctive trade dress in its footwear and packaging.
    • Defended and obtained a jury verdict for a publicly traded accounting services provider. Plaintiff claimed that client breached the parties' contract, committed fraud, and failed to reimburse monies owed to him for increased income tax liability he incurred following a merger and acquisition of his company.
    • As part of a two-person trial team, successfully defended financial services company during administrative trial before the Office of Administrative Hearings. Developed innovative defense strategy that enabled client to maintain its finance lenders license, which the Departments of Corporations sought to revoke on basis that client was engaging in allegedly unlawful practice regarding consumer loans.
    • Lead counsel for Fortune 100 bank in commercial real estate foreclosures and related litigation. Obtained marketable title to commercial properties located in jurisdictions throughout California for client.
    • Represented manufacturers in a diverse range of industries in successful prosecution and defense of claims for trademark and trade dress infringement.
    • Obtained favorable settlement for manufacturer of aerospace components in action concerning misappropriation of trade secrets and unfair competition.
    • Successfully settled case for home furnishings designer brought to enforce designer's copyright ownership rights in design against its competitor.
    • Achieved favorable results for a major oil company in environmental suit that culminated in a six-week arbitration to decide responsibility for cost of cleanup of petroleum contamination.
    • Lead counsel defending major financial services company against fraud allegations. Negotiated dismissal of entire action during early mediation with no concessions to plaintiff.
    • Obtained title to commercial property and favorable settlement for retail client through early mediation in action involving client's exercise of its option to purchase property.
