“I am an intellectual property attorney with over 30 years of in-house and law firm experience.”
Mr. Yee's practice focuses on intellectual property law, with a concentration in electrical, mechanical, electromechanical, computer architecture, systems, and software technologies. In his 30+ years of experience, Jim has written and/or prosecuted hundreds of patents in both the automotive and motor vehicle and gaming fields. Further, he has extensive experience in drafting and prosecuting patents for medical devices, software, customer loyalty programs, e-commerce systems, and building and construction systems. Jim spent a significant portion of his early career working in-house with Caterpillar Inc. and DaimlerChrysler Corporation. At Caterpillar Inc., he worked as an electrical engineer (where he, among other things, wrote C code for hydraulic excavators) and was subsequently an intellectual property attorney responsible for drafting and prosecuting domestic and foreign patent applications in the electromechanic, electrohydraulic, and computer-related arts.
He was also a senior attorney with Solar Turbines, Inc., a subsidiary of Caterpillar Inc., and most recently staff counsel at DaimlerChrysler Corporation, where he handled various intellectual property matters and agreements for the Jeep Platform, Scientific Laboratories, and Liberty Technical Affairs. At Howard & Howard, Jim has spent the last eighteen years providing legal counsel to companies both in the U.S. and abroad. He has represented clients through all stages of intellectual property procurement, provided non-infringement and invalidity opinions, and litigation support. Specifically, he has developed detailed intellectual property strategies for numerous clients, including a startup company (which subsequently went public) resulting in an IP portfolio including over 140 U.S. and foreign patent applications. Additionally, Jim has provided oversight on extensive patent portfolios and internal IP training for large clients.
Notably, he represents several overseas clients for which he provides in-house training and assists in the development and implementation of their intellectual property strategy. For these clients, Jim and a team of other Howard & Howard intellectual property attorneys draft the original patent applications and implement filing plans, both in and out of the U.S.
