Mr. McCarthy has extensive civil litigation and federal court experience, with a heavy concentration in contract and business tort disputes, as well as patent, trademark and copyright matters.
Mr. McCarthy is a trial lawyer whose practice focuses on business and intellectual property litigation. He has a multi-jurisdictional practice and has been specially admitted to practice in various courts around the country, including in California, Florida, Kansas, New York, North Carolina, Texas, Puerto Rico and the United States Virgin Islands.
Mr. McCarthy serves as lead counsel for many of the firm's litigation clients, including a Fortune 50 client that selected the firm as a litigation "Go-To Law Firm" in the 2008-2010 "In-House Law Departments at the Top 500 Companies" magazines. He holds the AV® Peer Review Rating from Martindale-Hubbell, its highest rating for ethics and legal ability. In addition, he has been bestowed the prestigious Michigan Super Lawyer recognition from 2009 through 2016 in the area of Business Litigation and was recognized as a "Top 100" Michigan Lawyer (2012 - 2016) and a "Top 50" Michigan Business Lawyer (2013 - 2015).
Mr. McCarthy is the firm's Litigation Group Leader and the Managing Member of the Ann Arbor, Michigan office. He is resident in the Ann Arbor office, but often works in the Royal Oak, Michigan office.
He was a law clerk for the Honorable Dorothy Comstock Riley of the Michigan Supreme Court from 1993 to 1995. Mr. McCarthy was an adjunct professor of legal writing at the University of Detroit Mercy from 1993 to 1995. He was a former chair and member of the Plymouth Township Zoning Board of Appeals and a Barrister with the American Inns of Court (University of Detroit Mercy Law School Chapter), a litigation/trial practice forum involving law school students, practitioners and judges. In law school, Mr. McCarthy received several American Jurisprudence Book Awards, he earned the Dean's Scholarship and he was selected to participate in the American Inns of Court litigation seminar. Mr. McCarthy was selected to the Frank Murphy Honor Society, Phi Beta Delta Honor Society and Alpha Sigma Nu Jesuit Honor Society. He was Editor-In-Chief of the University of Detroit Mercy Law Review.
